November 2022

In order to implement large-scale seagrass restoration in support of the UN Decade On Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), The Seagrass Consortium was founded in Santander, Cantabria, Spain.

In November 2022, the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of Cantabria (IHCantabria) hosted representatives from Project Seagrass, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, L’Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB), The Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA-CSIC-UIB), CGG and the Sea Ranger Service.

The principal focus of the meeting was the need to accelerate and develop both the scientific and logistical methods, and create the ‘standards’ to enable seagrass restoration at scale. An additional aim was to create unique employment for young people in deprived coastal communities to carry out restoration work, achieving a simultaneous social impact.

The decision was made to pool our collective knowledge and experience though a consortium, and work towards enabling large-scale seagrass restoration in Europe. ‘The Seagrass Consortium’ was born.
